Pastor Jonathan and I were reviewing worship songs for the next three months. As we talked, we discussed the biggest change in worship ministry. Here's what we came up with: vertical replaced horizontal in worship.
In seems, at least, in the slower worship songs, that songs directed toward God (vertical) have replaced songs about God (horizontal). For my money, that's a good change. Praise songs are often still declarative, but worship songs have grown more personal over the years.
Maybe you could leave a post with your favorite praise song (uptempo) and your favorite worship song. You might even throw in your favorite hymn, while you're at it.

God has always desired intimacy with us. We often offer up nice words or raise or hands. When we truly make a conncetion with Him, we are forever changed. Let us continue to touch His heart. Let us fall in love with Him over and over again. Only then will we be able to say, "It is well with my soul".
Pastor, Recently my favorite praise song is Amazed. In the first verse, lyrics below, the words "You sing all around," remind me of David's plea in Psalms, "Surround me with songs of deliverance." I also love being reminded that God's love for us is so great. I'm sure I'll have a new favorite every few months as new songs are introduced. But that seems like a good thing since God's compassions "are new every morning," My favorite old hymn is "How Great Thou Art." Thanks for asking.

I'll never forget the guy that didn't want me to play Shout to the Lord because he thought it would be to up tempo for our church. Remember Glenn???

I don't remember the Shout to the Lord uptempo controversy. Remind me--my mind is slipping.
Uptempo is usually not something I'm afraid of.

Testify, by Dottie Peoples I think, every time I hear it I feel like a highschooler, rolling down my windows, cranking the radio up and singing at the top of my lungs, "with every breath I take I will testify, testify, for as long as I shall live I will testify, testify, all my life"
Or, how about mixing it up a little and trying out a little Gods Property, Kirk Franklin and the Nu Nation. Teh song STOMP is so awesome. Yes, it's kinda rap oriented, but it will shake the congregation in their seats and maybe draw in more people.

And one last thought... how about some old school Carmen? maybe have a theatrical piece while the music team sings 'A witch's inviatation". Now that is a powerful song!
